A new series of microcontrollers (MCUs) from Infineon Technologies is intended for power conversion systems and next-generation industrial and consumer motor control applications. This covers lighting, computing/telecom power supply, industrial drives, power tools, renewable energy products, and home appliances. The Arm® Cortex®-M33 core-based Infineon PSOC Control family deliver on-board functionality to optimize and speed up current measurement, waveform generation, and real-time performance operations—all of which are essential to target system applications.Infineon PSOC Control family MCU For SiC, GaN Designs the volt post

Key Specifications of the New MCU Family Include:

  • Clock speed of up to 180 MHz, high-performance analog-to-digital converters (ADCs),
  • High-resolution (<100 ps) pulse-width-modulation (PWM) and an integrated CORDIC Accelerator to off-load real-time control tasks from the CPU.
  • CORDIC’s true synchronous “idle” sampling of up to 16 analog signals from the single core ADC is up to 25 percent faster without sampling jitter.
  • This powerful combination of power and performance yields system level bill-of-material (BOM) savings.
  • While the <10 uA deep sleep and <1 uA hibernate modes deliver valuable energy savings for low-power and battery-driven applications.

Power electronics based on wide-band gap (WBG) technologies, such silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), can be innovatively designed by the Infineon PSOC Control family to improve performance and further lower system-wide BOM costs.

The Support of ModusToolbox platform

The Infineon PSOC Control family, like all other Infineon MCUs, is supported by ModusToolbox Software, an extensible and modular development ecosystem that offers building blocks for both product evaluation and production. These contain device drivers, power conversion algorithms (PFC, LLC, Buck, etc.), and blocks for Field-Oriented Control (FOC) of brushless and permanent magnet motors. The ModusToolbox Software is complemented by evaluation boards, system reference designs, debuggers, and an extensive range of PC-based development tools, offering a versatile and all-encompassing development environment.

ModusToolbox Motor Suite

All PSOC Control family devices are also supported by the ModusToolbox Motor Suite, allowing designers to reach the market more quickly. The software, tools, and resources in this suite increase the ModusToolbox ecosystem’s capacity to handle motor control applications. Through a systematic development flow, the ModusToolbox Motor Suite simplifies these use cases and supports advanced motor control development kits, control algorithm selection, testing, tuning, and monitoring of motor parameters.

Key Comment

“The new Infineon PSOC Control MCUs extend the company’s commitment to delivering performance and efficiency in next-generation motor control and power conversion applications,” said Steve Tateosian, SVP of IoT and Industrial MCUs, IoT, Wireless and Compute Business, Infineon Technologies. “With extensive on-board analog functionality, high performance timers, hardware math acceleration, and a rich design tool ecosystem, the new device family will enable system designers to deliver innovative, energy-saving devices to both high-volume and specialized markets.”Infineon PSOC Control family MCU For SiC, GaN Designs the volt post

Availability

The first two MCUs in the Infineon PSOC Control family – with CPU clock speeds of 100 MHz and 180 MHz and up to 256 KB embedded flash – are now available for early access customers, with full market availability in Q1 2025.
