Infineon’s Sustainability Drive Takes a New Leap, Accolades Suppliers

In order to significantly cut CO2 emissions throughout the whole supply chain, Infineon Technologies is stepping up its cooperation with suppliers. To further encourage cooperation and encourage and assist suppliers in accelerating their decarbonization efforts, the company organized its first-ever Supplier Sustainability Summit. About 100 leading suppliers from the semiconductor industry attended the virtual event.

A key component of Infineon’s overall sustainability approach is supplier collaboration and the Supplier Sustainability Summit adheres to it. Infineon has already made great strides toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2030; since 2019, the firm has cut its CO2 emissions (scope 1 and 2) in half while simultaneously tripling its revenue.

The German semiconductor major added a pledge to establish a science-based goal that incorporates the supply chain (scope 3) in December 2023. More than 100 suppliers are being actively engaged by the procurement team to establish their own science-based goals and put suitable reduction strategies into place.

The semiconductor major company had a great chance to enable the sharing of best practices among suppliers and share insights from its own climate strategy and experience at the Supplier Sustainability Summit.

For example, two suppliers presented their knowledge of how to effectively set science-based targets, while specialists from the Infineon electrical procurement team shared ideas from their practical experience in reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2025. A panel discussion with Infineon executives and a specialist from the CDP (previously the Carbon Disclosure Project) expanded on the subject and provided attendees with more useful guidance.

Suppliers Recognized with Infineon Green Award

Suppliers who have made exceptional environmental progress and commitment over the past 12 months are recognized and honored with Infineon’s Green Award.

Applied Materials Inc. received the “Best Performance Award” for its ambitious climate plan, which included the company’s ground-breaking “Xchange” initiative and a 1.5°C science-based target. Infineon is working directly with Applied Materials as part of the endeavor to lower emissions and improve resource efficiency.

By facilitating the return and repair of spare parts for sophisticated semiconductor equipment, the program expands on the circular economy and benefits both businesses and the environment.

Sumco Corporation is the recipient of the “Best Improvement Award” for its outstanding advancements in environmental sustainability over the past 12 months. The Japanese business is the first to publicly pledge to establish a science-based goal for silicon wafers. After high-level leadership meetings, Sumco moved quickly to expand the use of renewable electricity sources and accelerate the company’s current carbon reduction targets.

iwis SE & Co. KG won the “Best Improvement Award” for businesses with annual revenue under one billion euros. The family-run business, situated in Munich, sets a fantastic example for many with its ambitious “Zero Carbon 2040 program” and adherence to science-based targets. Infineon acknowledges the proactive efforts to enhance the supply chain’s and operations’ environmental effect, as well as the incorporation of climate targets into the facilities’ environmental management systems.

Key Comments

“In order to meet our ambitious targets, we need you, our suppliers,” said Elke Reichart, Member of the Board and Chief Digital and Sustainability Officer at Infineon, during her welcome message. “Infineon’s scope 3 emissions make up the lion’s share of our footprint, especially the materials we source from our suppliers. Therefore, we very much look forward to joining forces with you. Together, we can stimulate and implement decarbonization strategies even better.”

“We would like to applaud the winners of our Green Awards: Applied Materials, Sumco and iwis for stepping up and taking responsibility for environmental sustainability and performance,” said Angelique van der Burg, Chief Procurement Officer at Infineon and host of the day. “We believe that this performance will motivate our whole supplier base to raise the bar higher and follow their example. Now let’s make the best practice a standard practice.”
