Kollmorgen Corporation expanded its IC Ironcore DDL motor family beyond 230 VAC devices by adding support for 400/480 VAC-powered applications.
Kollmorgen’s new direct linear motor can provide a continuous force of up to 8,211 N and a peak force of 13,448 N.
When supplied by higher bus voltages, the motor is designed to provide its rated force at higher speeds, making it perfect for applications such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication, battery manufacture, and industrial automation that demand rapid and precise movement of heavy loads.
Simpler, Lighter, More Compact Machinery
In situations with a bus voltage of 400 or 480 VAC, the IC Ironcore DDL motor can obviate the requirement for a transformer to power a motor with a lower voltage rating. Furthermore, a higher voltage motor can do the same amount of work with less amperage.
This decreased current draw in a higher-voltage environment may enable the use of a smaller drive amplifier and a lighter wire set.
With smaller drives, lighter wires, and no transformers, machine builders may be able to employ a smaller control cabinet with less cooling. Furthermore, the IC Ironcore DDL motor includes a water-cooling option that boosts continuous force production by up to 40-60%, potentially allowing for the specification of a smaller motor.
All of these advantages support a lighter, more compact, and sustainable machine design that’s simpler and more affordable to build and delivers greater value to both OEMs and their customers.
Enabling Versatile Solutions For Customers Worldwide
Another notable advantage of the IC Ironcore DDL motor is that it allows OEMs to service global markets without drastically altering their machines for each location. The bus voltage rating of 230/400/480 VAC is enough for the majority of clients in North America, Europe and Asia.
The motor is UL and CE certified, as well as RoHS and REACH compliant, easing the certification procedure for selling machines in all target markets across the world.
The IC Ironcore DDL motor joins Kollmorgen’s full family of direct drive linear motors, which includes the ICD Ironcore Low Profile DDL and the IL Ironless DDL.
When combined with AKD or AKD2G servo drives, these motors provide unparalleled precision, smoothness, and reliability for demanding applications. AKD2G dual-axis servo drives can even synchronize two motors, as in an x/y table application, conserving even more room in the control cabinet.
Leadership Comments
“We’re proud to greatly expand the size range, power range and versatility of our direct drive linear motor portfolio with the addition of the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL,” says Chris Cooper, senior director of product management. “This latest Kollmorgen product enables machine builders to achieve an entirely new level of linear motion performance that differentiates their designs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”
