The Tamil Nadu Government, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have officially unveiled the design of the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre, a cutting-edge research and development hub for green hydrogen technology. Located at IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, Chennai, this initiative marks a pivotal moment in India’s clean-energy journey.
Strategic Partnership & Funding
-
Funding: HMIL, supported by the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), has committed INR100 crore towards the project. Alongside state government backing, total investment reaches approximately INR 180 crore.
-
Location & Facilities: Sprawling across 65,000sq.ft., the centre will feature experimental and computational labs, digital twin systems for hydrogen infrastructure, custom test rigs, fabrication lines, pilot-scale electrolyzers and fuel cells, and a containerized demo zone.
-
National Impact: The centre aligns with India’s goals for energy independence by 2047 and the net-zero by 2070 roadmap. It aims to spawn a scalable hydrogen ecosystem—from production and storage to fuel cell deployment.
-
Local Innovation & Talent: Serving as a hub for public-private collaboration, the centre is expected to boost small- and medium-scale industry participation while nurturing a skilled workforce focused on hydrogen technologies.
-
Global Significance: Operating under Hyundai’s global HTWO brand, the HTWO Innovation Centre will integrate cutting-edge hydrogen know-how, enabling India to leapfrog traditional energy trajectories.
