R&S Verifies Next Generation eCall For Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF

In accordance with the most recent specification EN 17240:2024, Rohde & Schwarz(R&S) announced that it is working with Qualcomm Technologies to verify that Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) is implemented on Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon® Auto 5G Modem-RF.For NG eCall Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF opt R&S CMX500

By using innovative testing techniques, Rohde & Schwarz’s collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies seeks to improve the effectiveness and safety of vehicles emergency response systems.

By working together, Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies have been able to successfully verified that the NG eCall capability of the Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF complies with the latest eCall standards.

The Rohde & Schwarz CMX500 mobile radio tester, a complete testing solution for NG eCall that includes voice and data transmission, was used in the verification process.

This rigorous test confirmed that the implementation at both ends complied with the EN 17240:2024 standard by mimicking a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Additionally, in an effort to ensure that the solutions are future-proof, the CMX500 supports both 4G and 5G technologies.

The Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF, a 5G automotive-grade platform that provides high-speed connectivity, advanced positioning, and compatibility with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies, has hastened the development of next-generation connected vehicles.

In order to meet the demands of modern telematics, it makes it possible for reliable connectivity, precise multi-band GNSS navigation, and enhanced safety.

eCall Mandatory

Since 2018, all new cars sold in the EU have been required to have eCall, an automated vehicle emergency call system that was first introduced in 2015. However, emergency call systems will need to be modified for 4G/5G packet-switched cellular networks as 2G/3G circuit-switched cellular networks become outdated

European Commission’s Latest Regulations on NG eCall

According to the European Commission’s latest regulations, NG eCall will become mandatory on January 1, 2026. Guidelines for testing eCall systems over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) networks, including cutting-edge 4G LTE and 5G NR technologies, are established under this standard. The automotive industry will therefore need NG eCall testing solutions in order to integrate the new NG eCall functionalities into eCall modules.

As a highly versatile tool, the CMX500 with the CMX-KA098 software option can be effectively used for NG eCall testing under realistic network conditions.

To accelerate the deployment of this technology, cooperation between companies within the industry becomes increasingly important.

The work between Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies is aimed at mutually validating their solutions, reducing effort and accelerating time to market for their mutual customers.
