BASF Expands Semiconductor-Grade Sulfuric-Acid Production Capacity

BASF aims to increase production capacity for ultra-pure, semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid (H?SO?) at its Ludwigshafen plant in Germany. The cutting-edge facility will meet the expanding demand for high-purity chemicals used in advanced semiconductor chip fabrication throughout Europe.BASF semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid increase production the volt post 1

Operations at the new plant are set to commence in 2027, coinciding with important clients’ capacity ramp-ups.

The investment will be in the high double-digit million euro level, demonstrating BASF’s long-term commitment to Europe’s electronics ecosystem.

Europe Ramps Up Semiconductor Production

The boost comes as Europe ramps up semiconductor production, with numerous new chip fabrication sites under development or expansion. This rise is driving up demand for vital ultra-pure chemicals like sulfuric acid, which is used in chip production processes.

BASF’s investment is also a result of close coordination with a key partner who is now developing a new chip manufacturing plant in Europe.

These chips will be used in high-growth industries such as automotive electronics, mobile communications, and AI applications.

Improve Supply Chain Resilience And Assure Efficient

By producing semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid locally in Ludwigshafen, BASF hopes to improve supply chain resilience and assure efficient, consistent delivery of high-quality materials.

The new facility’s proximity to important client operations allows for faster response times and more efficient logistics, reducing lead times and boosting operational support.

Fulfill The Demanding Standards Of Semiconductor Manufacturing

The plant will use cutting-edge purifying technologies and stringent quality control measures. This will ensure the creation of ultra-high-purity chemicals that fulfill the demanding standards of semiconductor manufacturing. The plant will benefit from shared infrastructure and operating efficiency as it is located within BASF’s integrated production platform, the Ludwigshafen Verbund.

Leadership Comments

Anup Kothari, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE, stated, “We are proud to have earned the trust of key players in the semiconductor sector and to serve them as their partner of choice in establishing the future supply chain for advanced semiconductor materials in Europe. This strategic move underscores BASF’s commitment to supporting the growth of the advanced semiconductor industry in Europe while further leveraging the Ludwigshafen Verbund site.”BASF semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid increase production the volt post 1

BASF is a major company in high-purity chemicals for the semiconductor industry, delivering both single bulk chemicals and tailored formulations. These materials are essential for procedures including cleaning, etching, metal deposition, and chemical mechanical planarization. According to the business press release, BASF is maintaining its leadership position in the semiconductor value chain. This latest investment also contributes to Europe’s desire to create a more self-sufficient and resilient technology ecosystem.
