Microchip Technology new integrated actuation power solution combines companion gate driver boards with extensive Hybrid Power Drive (HPD) modules in silicon carbide or silicon technology.Microchip Actuation power Solutions for Electric Aircraft the volt post

The aviation sector is driven by a broad objective of decarbonization and sustainability to acquire the newest, most effective, and least polluting aircraft possible.

As the trend toward More Electric Aircraft (MEA) continues to rise, aviation power systems developers are shifting to electric actuation systems to meet these objectives and Microchip aims to abridge it with the new integrated actuation power solution.

The New Integrated Actuation Power Solution Features:

  • A power range of 5 kVA to 20 kVA.
  • The integrated actuation power solution caters the aviation industry a comprehensive electric actuation solution.
  • Regardless of the power output, the new integrated actuation power solution has the same footprint.
  • Companion gate driver boards are engineered to be seamlessly linked with Microchip’s HPD modules.
  • Offers a comprehensive motor drive solution for the electrification of various systems, including landing gear, braking, and flight controls.

Microchip offers power solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of the end user. These solutions range from low-power drone actuation systems to high-power eVTOL, MEA, and all-electric aircraft actuation systems.

“We developed the companion gate driver boards to be used with our existing HPD modules to bring to market a plug-and-play power solution for MEA,” said Leon Gross, vice president of Microchip’s discrete product group. “With this solution, customers no longer need to design and develop their own drive circuitry, which can reduce design time, resources and cost.”

The “Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment,” or DO-160, specifies the testing parameters that must be met by these highly reliable equipment. Shoot-through detection, desaturation protection, short circuit protection, Under Voltage Lock Out (UVLO), and active miller clamping are just a few from many of the protective features of these integrated actuation power solution.

The TIA/EIA-644 compatible Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) is used in the design of the gate driver boards to drive them with external PWM signals for low electromagnetic interference (EMI) and strong noise immunity.

By receiving feedback from the shunts located in the HPD module and the DC bus voltage, the gate driver board generates differential outputs for telemetry signals such as DC bus current, phase current, and solenoid current. Additionally, it offers the HPD power module’s two PT1000 temperature sensors’ direct output. miller clamping.

Companion Gate Driver Boards

Companion gate driver boards maximize the size and power efficiency of actuation systems by being lightweight, low-profile, and compact. The gate drivers’ ability to function in a temperature range of -55°C to +110°C is crucial for aviation applications, since they are frequently subjected to severe conditions.

For the control and drive circuit, the isolated companion gate driver boards only need a single 15V DC input; all other voltages are created on the card. This makes system cabling much simpler and drastically lowers the amount of system components.

By fusing power components with FPGAs, microcontrollers, security, memory, and timing, Microchip offers all-inclusive solutions for MEA. The products including the integrated actuation power solution from Microchip are made to assist clients in cutting expenses, expediting development, and increasing time to market.
