StoreDot and Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand revealed a groundbreaking milestone by demonstrating pioneering battery technology that charges an electric vehicle in just 10 minutes.
In less than ten minutes, the companies have shown how to charge a 77kWh battery pack from 10% to 80%. The battery pack, which is powered by StoreDot’s extremely fast charging high energy (300 Wh/kg) silicon-dominant battery cells, is installed in a certified fully driveable Polestar 5 prototype.
Throughout the test procedure, the vehicle demonstrated a peak charge rate of over 370kW and a constant charge rate of over 310kW. The battery pack never went beyond the target operating temperature that the engineers from both teams had specified. Throughout, all cell metrics, including temperature, voltage, and charged capacity, were monitored.
StoreDot and Polestar have also showcased these next-gen capabilities fast EV charging capabilities in an exclusive demo video
The demonstration showcases how StoreDot may be “drop-in” and incorporated into an existing automobile model. Additionally, it opens the door to extremely quick auto charging using the infrastructure already in place for charging, as opposed to use speciality chargers.
This world-first demonstration featuring a 10-minute fast EV charging with silicon-dominant battery cells showcased unprecedented charging speeds that will eliminate consumer charging anxiety, a major obstacle to widespread EV adoption, affirmed the official release.
The silicon-based anode technology’s capacity to push the limits of energy density and charging rate for a number of more battery generations is a significant benefit. On the other hand, the theoretical performance limits of typical graphite anodes are already being approached, which limits further developments.
The silicon architecture of StoreDot offers an essential route for continued progress in fields such as ultra-fast charging claims the official release.
StoreDot’s cutting-edge XFC battery cells made the breakthrough possible, and it marks another significant step forward for the company on its path to commercialization.
It also demonstrates the maturity, stability, and longevity of its revolutionary technology and opens the door for the industry to adopt XFC batteries.
Dr Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot:
“We are very excited to share this impressive achievement today and are proud to be on this journey with Polestar, a leading car brand who envisions high performance cars with a sustainable future. We’re happy to see our partner is among the first EV car makers to acknowledge that XFC is now a necessary standard to make vast EV adoption a reality. With our extreme fast charging technology, you can add 200 miles in under 10 minutes. This breakthrough revolutionizes EV ownership experience by eradicating the barrier of range and charging anxiety once and for all. Drivers can now truly travel long distances with the same freedom and convenience as traditional petrol-powered vehicles.”
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar:
“By eliminating charging times that were previously an obstacle, StoreDot’s XFC battery cells combined with our cutting-edge product development and battery engineering have unlocked new frontiers for electric mobility. This technology will reshape consumer expectations and accelerate mass EV adoption by making EV ownership a seamless experience for the mass market.”
The Novel XFC Cells
One of StoreDot’s projected milestones for 2024 was the demonstration that took place today, which was announced in January. Shipping prismatic B-samples to OEMs and concluding strategic production agreements are two more impending milestones.
StoreDot is still on pace to have its XFC cells, which can charge a vehicle 100 miles in five minutes, ready for manufacturing this year. By 2026, the business hopes to provide 100 miles charged in 4 minutes, and by 2028, it hopes to deliver 100 miles charged in 3 minutes.
