KT With R&S, VIAVI Showcases 10 Mbps Long-Distance Satellite Communication

The NTN technology that KT has developed in partnership with Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI Solutions addresses the disadvantages of lengthy propagation delays in satellite communication environments. Even between a geostationary (GEO) satellite and a user device, this technology can provide a bandwidth of over 10 Mbps.

The research project with KT was conducted using the CMX500 platform.

Full HD video was successfully transmitted by utilizing this improved transmission efficiency. A demonstration of this technology is available to attendees of the Moble World Congress 2025 in Barcelona at the KT stand located in Hall 4, Stand 4A60.

5G NTN technology was successfully demonstrated by KT on February 12, 2025, in a satellite communication environment with significant propagation delays. It employed a system that, without the use of retransmission mechanisms, precisely determines route loss between the satellite and device based on their changing distance over time (HARQ-less).

Consequently, full HD video transmission was made possible by achieving a bandwidth of over 10 Mbps at a distance of over 35,000 km between the consumer device and the satellite.

This technology was developed on the Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI Solutions NTN digital twin testbed. The VIAVI TM500-AS2 Network Tester and the CMX500 one-box signaling tester serve as the foundation for the testbed.

With an easy-to-use and flexible web-based user interface, the CMX500 radio communication tester is a 5G NR test solution that is ready for the future. It includes all 3GPP fading profiles and combines channel emulation and fading into one package. It is simple to adapt the modular design to particular test needs.

To enable thorough testing of any 3GPP FR1 band combination, for instance, more RF devices could be installed. More variety in sophisticated 5G NR testing is made possible by the availability of FR2 capabilities for the majority of configurations.

Early functional, system integration, capacity, performance, and regression testing for 5G base stations are supported by the VIAVI TM500 Network Tester series. It provides thorough testing across the whole protocol stack, from the physical layer to the NAS and application layers, by simulating thousands of mobile devices.

The VIAVI TeraVM, an application emulation and security performance solution, is utilized with the tester to provide thorough test coverage for wired and wireless networks as well as application services.

In addition to exploring the NTN digital twin testbed from Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI Solutions, attendees of MWC 2025 can witness a live demonstration of full HD video transmission between a geostationary (GEO) satellite and user device at KT booth 4A60 in hall 4. An expert is available for consultation at VIAVI Solutions’ booth in Hall 5, Stand 5A18, for those who would like additional information about the testbed.
