By extending the creepage distance between terminals, surface mount SiC SBDs, developed by ROHM, increase insulation resistance. In December 2024, eight models (SCS2xxxNHR) for automotive applications such onboard chargers (OBCs) will be deployed, along with eight models (SCS2xxxN) for industrial equipment including FA devices and PV inverters.
In applications like onboard chargers, the rapidly growing xEV market is driving the need for power semiconductors, such as SiC SBDs(Schottky barrier diodes), that offer low heat generation in addition to high-speed switching and high-voltage capabilities.
Compact surface mount devices (SMDs) that work with automated assembly equipment are also being used by manufacturers more and more to increase manufacturing efficiency. Because of their generally shorter creepage lengths, compact SMDs make high-voltage tracking prevention a critical design challenge.
High-performance SiC SBDs with easy mounting and breakdown voltages appropriate for high-voltage applications have been the focus of ROHM’s efforts.
By using an improved package design, it improves insulation performance compared to typical goods by achieving a minimal creepage distance of 5.1mm.
By removing the center pin that was formerly at the bottom of the package, the new SiC SBDs unique design increases the creepage distance to at least 5.1mm, which is around 1.3 times more than that of normal products.
When surface mounting the device on circuit boards in high voltage applications, this reduces the likelihood of tracking (creepage discharge) between terminals, obviating the necessity for insulation treatment by resin potting.
Two voltage ratings are offered, 650V and 1200V, supporting 400V systems commonly used in xEVs as well as higher voltage systems expected to gain wider adoption in the future. The automotive-grade SCS2xxxNHR are AEC-Q101 qualified, ensuring they meet the high reliability standards this application sector demands.
By producing ideal power devices that satisfy market demands, ROHM will keep developing high-voltage SiC SBDs, helping to meet the low energy consumption and high efficiency requirements in industrial and automotive equipment.
