A High-Side Gate Driver to Safeguard Battery-Operated Devices

Recently, Infineon Technologies unveiled the EiceDRIVER 1EDL8011, a high-side gate driver intended to safeguard battery-operated devices including robotics, e-bikes, cordless power tools, and vacuum cleaners in case of an any fault.A High-Side Gate Driver to Safeguard Battery-Operated Devices

Key Features of the New High-Side Gate Driver

  • Strong gate current capabilities enable quick on and off of high-side N-channel MOSFETs.
  • It has an external capacitor for a powerful start-up and an integrated charge pump.
  • When the working input voltage is low, the MOSFET gate voltage is provided by the internal charge pump.
  • Fault protection and inrush current management are handled by the gate driver IC.
  • A precaution known as Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) at input voltage stops the device from working in dangerous situations.
  • The driver is perfect for designs with limited space because it comes in a DSO-8 package.
  • It has a time delay, adjustable current setting threshold, variable blanking during MOSFET turn-on transitions, and overcurrent protection (OCP).

Effective switching is made possible by the 1EDL8011’s large operating voltage range of 8 V to 125 V and strong gate sinking current of up to 1 A. Furthermore, the product’s incredibly low 1 µA off-mode quiescent current reduces power usage during sleep mode. Additionally, the device has a VDS sensing function that monitors the disconnect MOSFET’s drain-to-source voltage in order to initiate an overcurrent shutdown.

The Need of High-Side Disconnect Switches

The power supply architecture of battery-powered devices, like motor drives and switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), frequently necessitates that a module be able to be disconnected from the main supply rail in the event that that module has a fault. In order to avoid a load short circuit from impacting the battery, high-side disconnect switches, such as MOSFETs, are frequently used to achieve this functionality.

Infineon will be showcasing a demo featuring the 1EDL8011 at its global technology forum OktoberTech™ 2024 in Silicon Valley on 17 October.
