Fumio Kishida at Rapidus, Commits To Boost Homegrown Semiconductors

With government funds promised, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is stepping up his support for homegrown manufacturers of next-generation semiconductors.

“We need to continue expanding investments in semiconductor and AI technology,” Kishida said after visiting the Rapidus Corp. semiconductor factory recently.

He clarified that the government will propose laws to increase financing and promote the mass manufacture of innovative chips and create vital semiconductor ecosystem.

“I will submit the necessary bills for mass production as soon as possible,” Kishida said.

Modern semiconductors with a 2 nanometer line width are expected to be completed in prototype form by the company by 2025, and mass production might begin as early as 2027.

The government has already made the decision to contribute up to $6.04 billion, or 920 billion yen, to the project.

Legislative measures to assist the firm were also included in the government’s Basic Policy on Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform, which was adopted by the Cabinet in June.

Rapidus Advanced Semiconductor Plant Advancement and Announcement

In Last Year, Rapidus officially announced that the company will begin its Advanced Semiconductor Plant Construction in Chitose City. A company engaged in the research, development, design, manufacture, and sales of advanced logic semiconductors, Rapidus Corporation, head Quartered at Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo announced that it will begin preparing for the construction of a plant for the development and manufacturing of state-of-the-art semiconductors in Chitose City, Hokkaido.

Rapidus will build a state-of-the-art facility in Chitose City and support the development of advanced logic semiconductor technology through international collaboration with IBM, imec, and other entities. After the research period is over, the company plans to commercialize the findings as an advanced logic foundry.
