Monitor Intense Motions, Impacts with New ST IMU

With a huge accelerometer full-scale range of 32g and a 4000 degrees-per-second (dps) gyroscope, the STMicroelectronics LSM6DSV32X 6-axis inertial module (IMU) can monitor intense motions and impacts, including freefall height estimate. The new sensor device, which is prepared to power next generations of edge-AI applications, adds functionality and extends battery life to wearables for consumers, asset trackers, and worker impact and fall alarms.ST 6-axis inertial module with edge-AI for intense motions

The LSM6DSV32X 6-axis inertial module adds artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms based on decision trees to the family of smart sensors that already includes ST’s machine-learning core (MLC).

Product developers may add new features, reduce latency, and conserve power with these sensors since they have an MLC for context sensing and a finite state machine (FSM) for motion tracking.

By utilizing the integrated capabilities of LSM6DSV32X 6-axis inertial module:

  • The power budget is reduced to less than 6µA for features like gym-activity detection.
  • 6-axis inertial module incorporates ST’s Sensor Fusion Low-Power (SFLP) technology.
  • Enable 3D orientation tracking at an only 30µA consumption.
  • The module automatically adjusts sensor settings in real-time to constantly optimize power and performance by enabling adaptive self-configuration (ASC).

The LSM6DSV32X 6-Axis IMU Incorporates:

  • ST’s Qvar electrostatic charge-variation sensing in addition to the accelerometer and gyroscope to provide sophisticated user interface features like touching, swiping, and tapping.
  • An analog hub for acquiring and processing external analog signals is also included in the module.

Libraries and Tools

To reduce the time it takes for new goods to reach the market, product developers may rely on a wide range of readily available libraries and tools. These include a specific GitHub repository that offers code examples like as sports-activity and head-gesture detection, and the user-friendly MEMS Studio environment that facilitates assessment and use-case creation. Hardware adapters for attaching the IMU to ST’s evaluation and proof-of-concept boards, such the ProfiMEMS board, Nucleo sensor expansion board, and Sensortile.box PRO, are also available as resources.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The LSM6DSV32X is scheduled to enter volume production in May 2024 in a 2.5mm x 3mm x 0.83mm 14-lead LGA package. Sample requests and pricing information are available from local ST sales offices. Pricing starts from $2.98 for orders of 1000 pieces.
